Little Pittaford Cottage lies at the heart of The South Hams, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is just 2 miles from the nearest beach. The picturesque village of Slapton is a mile away and has a village shop, a church and two really good pubs, The Tower Inn and the Queens Arms. At the end of Slapton Ley is the hamlet of Torcross which has a shop, a butcher and the locally renowned Start Bay Inn which specialises in fantastic fish and chips. The nearby village of Stokenham has two more pubs and a popular farm shop selling an extensive range of local produce.

The historic port of Dartmouth is about a 20 minute drive to the east along the glorious coast road. The town has a wealth of interesting shops, galleries and restaurants, an outdoor heated swimming pool, an M&S Food Store and a Sainsbury’s supermarket. Britannia Naval College occupies an impressive position overlooking the town and guided tours are sometimes available. The River Dart acts like a magnet to people - go crabbing on the embankment, hire your own boat or take a trip up the river to Dittisham for a spot of lunch, or beyond to Totnes for a day out. Maybe even venture out to sea to catch your supper! Take the ferry across the River Dart to Kingswear and travel back in time on the steam railway line to Paignton. The Flavel is Dartmouth’s art centre and has a cinema, a theatre, café, bar and library. Woodlands Leisure Park lies a few minutes drive to the north of Dartmouth and is a fantastic all weather adventure park for all ages with water rides and a falconry centre.

Journey west from the cottage and you’ll come to Kingsbridge – under 20 minutes by car. You will find a good range of shopping facilities here, an indoor swimming pool and a small cinema. Travel a further 6 miles or so to arrive at Salcombe, a popular and very pretty sailing resort. The market town of Totnes lies about a 20 minute drive away and provides a wealth of interesting shops and cafes.

Within about an hours drive are the cities of Plymouth (visit the National Marine Aquarium for a great day out) and Exeter (with its beautiful Cathedral and fascinating restored docks and canal area). The wild and wonderful Dartmoor also takes about an hour to reach by car.

The Cottage has a number of walks from the doorstep and is very well placed for exploring the South West Coastal paths and Green Lanes. The area has a superb range of sporting and leisure facilities and there are a fantastic selection of fine restaurants, cosy pubs and stylish bars. Explore the wonderful range of beaches from Blackpool Sands with its unrivalled Blue Flag facilities to tiny Lannacombe which has some great surf and rock pools. Discover some of Devon’s most beautiful National Trust and English Heritage properties and enjoy a cascade of local events throughout the year.
